About the artist…
Djerlens (DJ) Chery is a Haitian artist who studied visual art at Dillard High School/Center for the Arts. He furthered his education in the Visual Arts & Design Academy (VADA) at Broward College. His art has been exhibited at the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens Orchid Festival, Young at Art Museum, Made in Broward, Joseph C. Carter Park, Parker Playhouse, K.C. Wright Art Show, FatVillage Artwalks, and he has painted several murals in Broward County and Orlando, FL. Djerlens also works as an art teacher at Southside Cultural Arts Center, where he teaches young children, teens, and seniors .
Primarily a muralist, Djerlens begins his creative process by researching the site in collaboration with local residents to provide a contextual framework for his work. He seeks out historical, environmental, or cultural phenomena that can create unique identifiers for visitors and the community. His intent is to find connections that foster a unique sense of place. Djerlens believes that art can be a powerful means to influence reflections on community and social issues, connecting people and overcoming obstacles.
